    South Kona District Overview

The South Kona District is an extremely historical area, many ancient sites can still be seen and visited along the coastline. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Historical Park offers glimpses of life in ancient Hawaii and also has nearby pristine swimming and snorkeling. At Kealakekua Bay, just up the coast from the park, one can look across the water and see the Big Island as Captain James Cook did when he anchored his ship here in 1779. The climate is cooler along the highway that overlooks the park and bay, several hundred feet above sea level.
