Major Towns in North Hilo:

Hakalau (find listings in this town)

Hakalau is known for its old railway bridge, which spans a deep gorge and overlooks Hakalau Bay. Nearby is Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge was set aside in 1985 to protect and manage endangered forest birds and their rain forest habitat. Located on the windward slope of Mauna Kea, the 32,733-acre refuge supports a diversity of native birds and plants equaled by only one or two other areas in Hawaii.

Honomu (find listings in this town)

Located about 11 miles north of Hilo is the picturesque plantation town of Honomu. Now a quaint storefront village of shops, art galleries and a temple, this town was known in the 1940s as "Little Chicago."

Akaka Falls State Park is nearby, about 3.5 miles away. Under a rainforest canopy, hike down gulches where streams are flowing and waterfalls are splashing, and enjoy gorgeous stands of bamboo, ginger and many flowering trees and plants. The main attraction is the 420 ft. cascades of Akaka Falls (higher than Niagra Falls) and nearby Kahuna Falls spilling into deep ravines.

A few minutes past Honomu is Kolekole Beach Park, below the 100-foot high bridge that rises over Kolekole Pass. A tranquil span of black sand fronting a tossing ocean, Kolekole is especially popular with the locals, who use its five pavilions for a wide variety of social functions and special occasions.

Ninole (find listings in this town)

Further up the lush Hamakua coast of the Big Island is Ninole. Visit the Ninole post office, known to be the smallest post office in the country!

Ookala (find listings in this town)

Papaaloa (find listings in this town)

Next to Laupahoehoe, the village of Papaaloa serves as a reminder of yesteryear, when the plantation town, its surrounding camps, the mill garage, ball field and store fronts were bustling centers of activity.

Papaikou (find listings in this town)

Pepeekeo (find listings in this town)

Papaikou is only 4 miles from Old Town Hilo. Papaikou is an old plantation village and is one of the most stable communities in Hawaii. There are very few houses sold in Papaikou on the market since they are usually passed to family.

Papaikou has a very lovely surfing beach at the mouth of the Kapue Stream, used mostly by the locals for both surfing and fishing. There are blue travertine stones on the beach, as well as lava rock and black sand.

Pepeekeo is a few miles north of Papaikou, with the distinction of the old Pepeekeo Sugar Mill.

The 4-mile Onomea scenic route runs between Papaikou and Pepeekeo, off of the main highway. A segment of the old Belt Road and original island trail system, the drive has a section of the ancient Alaloa Coastal Trail which leads to Kahalii, a former Hawaiian fishing village.
